Organisation
The Jersey F A (“The Association”) is the governing body for football in Jersey. The Association looks after the governance of the sport in Jersey including the rules, discipline and membership. As well as the governance of the sport, the Jersey FA run the Island’s representative teams, a Centre of Excellence, an extensive education programme; train the match officials and a comprehensive football development plan.
The Association is a member of The Football Association (“The FA”) and receives significant funding from The FA which is ring fenced for staff wages and developing the game in the Island. Although the funding from The FA is significant, the Association is still under funded and relies on the goodwill of volunteers, grants from Education Sport and Culture, sponsorship and a compulsory membership scheme.
The Association is a limited company with a Board of Directors, a Chief Executive Officer and a mixture of 6 fulltime and part-time staff. The Association has 19 member clubs and a football council of 12.
The Jersey Football Association was formed in 1905 and has evolved as an Association since then. The most significant changes for the Association have really taken place in the last ten years. The FA has seen huge growth in revenue from TV rights received from marketing the England team and The FA Cup. The FA were able to plough significant amounts of money into grassroots football and the Association has benefited from this additional funding.
Although well down the food chain, due to the size of the island compared to larger counties in the UK, Jersey has benefited from an income stream from The FA to support its football development programme. As well as funding many projects and initiatives, The FA has funded a fulltime Football Development Managers post in Jersey 10 years ago.
During the past three years, The FA funding has also meant that a fulltime CEO has been employed as well as a part-time Referee Development Officer and Welfare Officer.
Within the last few months the Jersey FA has become a Limited Company.
Representative Football
Since it’s formation in 1905 the Association has played its nearest rivals Guernsey for the famous Muratti Vase. Each alternative year Jersey and Guernsey play Alderney in a semi-final. At its peak this competition attracted crowds in excesses of 12,000 and still today crowds of over 3,500 come to watch this annual match. The competition has become synonymous with any inter-insular competition
The Jersey teams however spread their wings further and regularly compete in the Island Games which they have now won three times and are current champions. They have competed in numerous age groups in South West Counties Competition and also in other international friendlies.
Currently Jersey is looking to expand their games programme and is in consultation with other islands and small nations to form a champions league type of competition spread over 18th months.
