The FA Youth Award - Module 1

Introduction to the Module
The FA Youth Award Module 1 – ‘Developing the Environment’, is a vocational course that provides candidates with an opportunity to develop an awareness of both the practical and theoretical aspects of coaching young players in the 5-11 age group.

CPD for Level 1 CCF Coaches
The FA Youth Award Module 1 will further enhance coaching knowledge and provide an excellent CPD route for holders of the 1st4sport Level 1 and/or Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football qualification.

Course Prerequisites
Candidates are required to:
– be at least 16 years of age and either:
– hold a valid 1st4sport Level 1 CCF or higher which includes a current FA Emergency Aid Award and a current FA Safeguarding Children in Football workshop certificate
or
– be a qualified teacher with QTS status, together with the completion of the FA Age Appropriate Coaching Introductory Module

Course Aims
To provide candidates who have an ongoing involvement in coaching young football players with an opportunity to improve their knowledge and confidence in coaching children in the 5-11 year age group.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the FA Youth Award Module 1 candidates should be able to:
– identify the components of Long Term Player Development (LTPD) and their relevance to young players;
– develop an awareness of the importance of the social corner and its impact on the development of a young player;
– identify the different ways that a young player may use to process information and how to incorporate these into your coaching methodology;
– develop a greater awareness of the physical corner and its impact on the development of a young player;
– define FUNdamental movement skills incorporating Agility, Balance & Co-ordination and their relevance to the game;
– develop a greater awareness of the technical corner and its impact on the development of a young player;
– explain and demonstrate how practices can be modified to provide an appropriate challenge to each individual player;
– develop a greater awareness of the psychological corner and its impact in the process of player development;
– describe the importance of self esteem and motivation in the process of player development;
– identify the major components of session planning to incorporate the four corners;
– signpost where you can go next on your coaching pathway.

Course Format
The FAYA Module 1 is comprised of four units based around the FA's LTPD Four Corner Model. To successfully complete the course candidates must attend, contribute to and complete all four units of study:
1. The Social Corner
2. The Psychological Corner
3. The Physical Corner
4. The Technical Corner

There is no formal assessment associated with the course, however candidates will be expected to consolidate the course information, prepare for the delivery of a coaching session and in the light of this review their knowledge and experience and develop an action plan for their further development in the role as a football coach.
