Women's and Girls Football Continues To Grow

Women's and Girls Football Continues To Grow through the summer

It has been another successful summer of football for Women's and Girls in Jersey. The Jersey FA Community Programme working in partnership with Jersey Sport, launched several successful initiatives throughout the summer as part of the FA National Game Strategy to grow the Women's and Girls game.

Jersey FA Community Coach (Girls) Lucy Even said, "It was brilliant to see such a large turnout for the girls Fun Week this Summer. This summer has shown that the interest for girls football in Jersey is continuing to grow, and we are offering lots of opportunities for girls to play football in Jersey whilst linking them to local clubs."

36 girls from school years 1 to 7 took part in the Jersey FA Girls Fun Week July 31st - 4th August, During the week the girls were introduced to some of Jersey FA Women's Squad that won Bronze at the Natwest Island Games with a question and answer. In attendance were Women's Head Coach Jodie Botterill and players Megan Wood, Natasha Keen and Sara Luce.

Alongside the Girls Fun Week the Jersey FA Community Programme delivered more Free Fun Nights. These nights offer a free taster sessions for girls aged 5 to 12 to take part in the beautiful game with 70+ girls getting involved.

Lucy Even added; "This is an important initiative because, it provides a chance for girls who are participating in football for the first time to do so in a fun enjoyable environment. Parents are also provided with information on other opportunities within local football."

As well as what has been delivered above for the 5 - 11's the Jersey FA has also been delivering Come and Play Sessions for girls aged 16+. Over 24 girls enjoyed a 6 week programme were they participated in small sided matches.

Jersey FA Community Coach Lucy Even continued; "The come and play sessions are great for development of Women's and Girls football in Jersey because 16 to 18 is a big drop out age in women's football. I am looking to provide opportunities where girls aged 16+ can enjoy football, in a non-competitive environment and hopefully they will enjoy it enough to move in local clubs."

Off the pitch girls were treated to a courageous display from the England's Lioness's who reached the Semi-Finals of the 2017 European Cup.
