Guernsey U21s win for fifth consecutive year

Guernsey lifted the Ambassadeur Bowl for the fifth year in a row, thanks to a 4-3 win over Jersey’s Under-21s at Springfield.

Will Fazakerley put the visitors ahead just after the half hour mark, bursting through the defensive line to slot in the opener.

The hosts hit back within five minutes though as St Peter striker Jake Prince, who looked dangerous up front throughout, beat the offside trap and calmly passed the ball into the back of the net to bring his side level in what was an even first half.

The Sarnians were ahead again on 59 minutes when Sam Masefield’s looping header dropped in over his own goalkeeper Danny Birrell. At the other end Sol Solomon’s powerful free-kick was well saved by Jordan Kelly.

Guernsey substitute Robbie Legg made it 3-1 with an accurate strike from wide on the right that found its way in at the far post to spark a frenzied finale in front of a crowd of more than 400.

Five minutes from the end Solomon netted from close range to reduce the deficit before Legg grabbed his second to, again, open up a two goal advantage for the visitors.

Jersey weren’t done yet though, and captain Harry Curtis’ goal two minutes into stoppage time gave Paul Renton’s team hope but it turned out to be no more than a late consolation.
