Jersey name 18-strong women’s squad for Ynys Mon tournament

Players from seven clubs included in squad

Jersey’s women’s squad for the upcoming Inter Games tournament in Ynys Mon has this morning been announced, with players from seven different clubs represented.

Southampton’s Sara Luce and JTC Jersey Wanderers’ Amy Tierney get the nod as the two goalkeepers, with UK-based Holly Muirhead, Megan Wood and Emma Dempsey all included.

There’s plenty of experience in the squad, with eight of the 18 having been part of the 2015 Island Games gold medal winning group. Meanwhile six of the squad are still in their teens, including 16-year-old midfielder Daisy Jackson.

“We’ve had to make some tough decisions when trying to pick the squad for the tournament as all the players have shown great commitment and work ethic at training and at the fitness sessions on Sunday mornings,” said joint head coach Fiona MacKinnon-Fox.

We have a good mix of experienced players, including some who have played in two to three Island Games already, and some younger players of which this will be their first time experiencing a tournament for Jersey.

“We’re excited to put all our hard work and training into practice in June, and hopefully come away with another medal which we’re confident we can do with the squad we have.”

Jersey’s women will face the Isle of Man and Gibraltar in the group stage of the tournament, which kicks off on Sunday 16th June 2019.

The tournament was set up as 2019 Island Games hosts Gibraltar were unable to include football in their event due to a lack of pitches.

Squad in full:

Sara Luce (Southampton), Amy Tierney, Lauren Quemard, Libby Barnett, Natasha Keen, Abigail Scandrett, Eve Watson (all JTC Jersey Wanderers), Sophie Botterill, Sylvia Spinola, Rosie Corbett (all St Lawrence), Tiffany Sundby, Anita Tavares, Daisy Jackson, Jodie Botterill, Ciara Giles (all Rozel Rovers), Emma Dempsey (Loughborough University), Holly Muirhead (Worthing FC), Megan Wood (Yeovil Town).

A further group of players is on standby in case of any injuries or unavailability.
