Muratti 2023 Winners

Jersey Men’s Team Aiming High at Island Games

Jersey open their group campaign against Gozo on Sunday 9 July at 2.30pm.

The Guernsey 2023 NatWest International Island Games get underway this month, with the opening ceremony on Saturday 8 July followed the next day by Jersey’s opening games in the football competition.

Jersey’s men take on Gozo in our opening group stage game at Corbet Field, kicking off at 2.30pm on Sunday 9 July.

“We’re really looking forward to it,” said Jersey midfielder Toby Ritzema in the build up to the games.

“Being around the squad, I’ve heard a lot of good stories from Island Games, and hopefully we can add more memories together this year.”

It’s been a busy year for Ritzema, who only earlier this season played in his first senior Muratti.

“I’m very proud,” said Toby of his achievements this term. “It’s the dream to play in these as a kid growing up in Jersey. I’m lucky to be able to do it this year, and I hope that I can continue to do so for years to come.”

Heading into the Island Games with high hopes, Ritzema feels that Jersey possesses a strong squad capable of challenging for the biggest prize.

“I think, when you see some of the players missing out such as Sammy Sutcliffe and Darryl Mvalo, it sums up the strength we have,” said Toby.

“With Sol Solomon now being in the squad, it brings us a huge boost, as well as Harry Curtis, who’s returning with loads of experience playing in the UK. We also have the regulars such as Joe Kilshaw and Lorne Bickley, who are obviously great players. The list goes on, so it shows the strength we have.

“I thin that (gold) has to be the aim,” he concluded.

“It’s been a long time since Jersey have won it and I would love to be part of the team that finally does it.”

The Jersey men’s game against Gozo will be streamed LIVE on YouTube from 2.15pm on Sunday 9 July.
