Young Leaders - Brody Morris

An interview with Community Coach Brody Morris

WE RECENTLY SPOKE TO COMMUNITY COACH brody morris AS PART OF OUR YOUNG LEADERS SERIES LOOKING INTO WHAT INSPIRES YOUNG LEADERS ON JERSEY.

What inspired you to become a coach?

I was inspired to become a coach by my dad and sisters being coaches already. They all enjoyed it and it seemed like a beneficial job for my future career as a Primary School teacher. I enjoyed working with children, so I knew I would enjoy coaching them. I also was inspired to coach by the lack of female coaches on the Island, so I felt that I could encourage more girls to participate if there were more female coaches.

What do you enjoy about coaching?

I enjoy working with the children to deliver a fun, enjoyable and effective session that all the children are engaged in. Also, it was nice seeing them develop and improve over the school year.

What skills do you feel you have developed through coaching?

I feel that I have developed many skills over the 6/7 years I have coached. These include improving my confidence and behaviour management skills, as well as my organisational skills to ensure sessions are prepared on time. I would also say that I have developed my ability to communicate with the children and learn what sessions work well for different groups/ages.

What advice would you give to somebody who is interested in becoming a coach?

Advice I would give to someone wanting to become a coach is to get stuck in and involved straight away. Try not to be embarrassed and shy, the children want to have fun so encourage that and show that you enjoy it as well. It is also beneficial when applying for jobs surrounding childcare, teaching & coaching as it provides valuable work experience and helps you develop useful skills.
