Young Leaders - JJ Lloyd

An interview with Performance Centre Coach JJ Lloyd.

WE RECENTLY SPOKE TO Performance Centre Coach JJ Lloyd AS PART OF OUR YOUNG LEADERS SERIES LOOKING INTO WHAT INSPIRES YOUNG LEADERS ON JERSEY.

What inspired you to become a coach?

I think it would have to be the thought of coaching and developing some of the best young players coming through currently and passing on the knowledge I gained as player through the Jersey FA Performance Centre age groups. I was fortunate enough to have some of the best coach’s like Paul Renton and Dave Walsh, to name a couple, who passed a wealth of experience onto me and I hope I can do the same to the players I coach.

What do you enjoy about coaching?

Delivering coaching sessions and putting what we worked on into practice when playing games, it’s great to see the team eager to learn. Another would be to see the smile on everyone’s faces when training or playing matches, it’s great to see them all enjoying themselves at the same time.

What skills do you feel you have developed through coaching?

You gain so much through coaching players which helps you develop your organisation, communication and adaptability skills. Taking on a leadership role through coaching really does do so much for people and I would encourage everyone if they have a passion for football to give it a go.

What advice would you give to somebody who is interested in  becoming a coach?

Be confident to give it a go, you will gain lots of transferable skills which will benefit you. Loads of local clubs would appreciate help so even just go down and ask to watch or help out and to progress your knowledge of coaching. Also speak to other coaches or staff at the Jersey FA about courses that you can do online and the bursaries that are available to support you to gain some qualifications and improve your knowledge of the game.
